Shadow Drawing
Does everything have a shadow? Take a look around and see what things form shadows. You will notice that almost everything has a shadow. Any object that can block light can cast shadows. When an object blocks part of the light, but allows part of the light through, it is called translucent. These objects create colored shadows. Shadows change size based on how close they are to the light source. Explore the shadows where you are!!
Materials: Paper, pencil, found objects, and a light source
Step 1: Gather some objects that you would like to draw. Choose objects that have interesting lines, like plastic figurines. Take your sketchbook outside, or use a lamp or flashlight to shine onto your workspace.
Step 2: Place toys or figures onto sketchbook. Turn them in different directions and see how their shadows change. Trace around the shadows to create shadow art!
Step 3
- :Find other things that have interesting shadows and trace them, trees, leaves, your hands…
- Draw an environment for your shadow drawings, where do your shadow drawings live? Create a background, middle ground and foreground by using overlapping shapes and scale.
- Take your shadow art to the next level, color in your shapes with crayons, markers or paint.
- Grades K-2 Seesaw: Take a picture :photo:: or video :video: :mic: of your shadow drawing and email.
- Grades 3-5: Google Classroom: Take a photo of your shadow drawing and turn in to Google Classroom or email.
